Between them, these programs are currently helping to conserve over 3 million hectares of forests. Their experience shows how to make PES work, but also -- problems to avoid.

  • Knowledge | Lessons Learned from an Agro-Silvo-Pastoral Technology Transfer from Costa Rica to Cameroon

    A World Bank-supported pilot project, launched in January 2011, has demonstrated that several agrosilvopastoral technology innovations and systems developed and/or tested in Central America can be adapted to the Tugi (Gutah) Hills in the North West Region of Cameroon, resulting in the rehabilitation of degraded pasture lands, improved livestock productivity, increased income of the rural communities and reduced risk and vulnerability to climate change. A new PROFOR activty aims to document and disseminate the lessons from that project.

  • Knowledge | Chile: Forests, Trees and Conservation in Degraded Lands

    Chile is one of the most developed countries in the southern hemisphere and relies heavily on its natural resource base for employment and exports. Yet, despite its natural assets and economic prowess, the country is plagued by serious land degradation problems including desertification, accelerated soil erosion, and forest degradation. This activity will provide knowledge to the Chilean Government and other stakeholders on best practices and guidance for restoration of degraded lands through forestry applications suitable for the Chilean context.

  • Knowledge | Community Forestry Enterprise Competitiveness and Access to Markets in Mexico

    This activity aims to develop consensus, through a stakeholder-driven process, on a course of action required to position Mexico’s community forestry sector as a high-value provider to niche markets from sustainably managed community forests, delivering both income and biodiversity protection. It has produced a guide in Spanish top evaluating economic and financial returns in community forest projects.

  • Knowledge | Strengthening Forest Governance in Peru - Phase II

    Building on a previous FLEG program implemented by IUCN/TRAFFIC/VERIFOR ( the Forest Governance and Transparency in the Amazon Region project in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru), PROFOR supported efforts to promote national forest stakeholder networks and boost their participation in policy dialogue and good governance in Peru.

    PROFOR co-hosted two well-attended sessions at Forest Day 4 in Cancun. One brought to the fore previous analysis on the potential for forest landscape restoration to help countries adapt to climate change and curb greenhouse gas emissions. The second focused on governance and illegal logging.

    Building on the successful work of the Rainforest Alliance's Sustainable Forestry Division in Mexico and Central America, PROFOR co-financed three case studies documenting changes in income, return on investment and the role of technical assistance in bringing investments to their full potential in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
