Desert Cloud Forests in Yemen and Oman are unique and fragile ecosystems, subject to human threats and climate change repercussions.
Developing countries are expected to suffer the most from changes in climatic patterns.
Forest and tree management could provide a low-cost approach to enhancing resilience of local landscapes to climate change but needs to balance production, livelihood, adaptation and mitigation goals.
PROFOR is supporting the creation of a multidisciplinary team grouping experts from Brazil's leading research agencies to improve climate change assessments and map climate impacts on agriculture and forests in Brazil over the next 50 years. Improved assessments could provide crucial information to policy makers on priorities, geographical targeting, and phasing of investments for adataptation and mitigation to climate change.
PROFOR supported the gathering of best practices and lessons learnt from World Bank-supported watershed management projects with a view toward offering guidelines that could apply to new programs.
With PROFOR support, the World Bank’s Europe and Central Asia staff will undertake two case studies to assess the benefits of: sustainable upland forest and land management on downstream water users; and increasing the use and efficiency of firewood to reduce the use of fossil fuels and hence greenhouse gas emissions.
